History & Formation
Who are TOSDEF?
This project is an initiative started by the Kenya Assemblies of God churches in Thome Section under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Harris Gichuhi who is the Section Presbyter. The project is meant to address the plight of churches within the section that have no plots and thus run on rental facilities. Under the Kenya government administration these churches fall within Roysambu constituency in Nairobi County. Roysambu constituency is a commercial and residential suburb of Nairobi city that covers an area of 48.80km² (18.8sq mi) with a population of 210,863 people according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics as per 2019 census. Currently, there are 13 churches out of which 7 run on rental facilities. The churches comprises of the following
KAG New Beginnings under Rev, Dr. Harris Gichuhi.
KAG River of God under Rev. Tony Kiamah
KAG Githurai ‘44’ under Rev. Nicodemus Waka.
KAG Kahawa West under Rev. Patrick Kawe.
KAG Mirema under Rev. Alex Ng’ang’a.
KAG Zimmerman under Pst. John Chavene.
KAG Marurui under Rev. Peter Ihura.
KAG Evergreen under Rev. Daniel Karugu.
KAG Kiwanja under Rev. Kenneth Kairu.
KAG Word of Life under Rev. David T. Kasuku.
KAG Ndururumo under Pst. Lucy Ngugi.
KAG Njathaini under Pst. Lydiah Thibitie
KAG Wellsprings under Pst. Jane Wainaina
The price of plots within Thome Section is extremely high beyond the reach of a single church. The least amount of money required to settle one church is ksh. 7 million as the prices differ depending on locality. Also in the advancement of the Great Commission, there are potential areas where KAG need to open up new churches within Thome Section. The population of the area is 210,863. With the rural to urban migration on the rise, it is estimated that by 2050 about 68% of the world population will be living in urban areas.
Proposed Problems and Solution
Thome Section being a suburb of the capital of Kenya the cost of land is very high to be handled by a single church – the reason the Section came up with the project to pull resources together and settle the churches without plots. This will enhance sustainable church growth.
At moment a plot size of 40 by 80 feet (3,200 square feet) is going for ksh. 7millon ($54,000) and this can accommodate a population of 300 people.
The cost of running churches on rental facilities is very high and unsustainable and previously before coming up with this project we closed down a number of churches. For example KAG Mirema monthly rent is ksh. 230,000 ($1,800), KAG Zimmerman is ksh. 30,000 ($230), KAG Mashinani is ksh. 20,000 ($155), KAG Marurui is ksh. 15,000 ($ 115), etc depending on church locality. The challenge is that after sometimes the rent will be adjusted upward and thus causing strain to these churches.
On the other hand the rate of land appreciation in the city suburbs is very high. For example, in the year 2020 the price of a plot at Zimmerman where one of our churches is located was approximately 4million ($30,800). Today, three years later the price is ksh. 7million ($ 54,000). Next year the price will go higher than that and if no intervention measures put in place, we risk closing down these churches. The tragic is that if measures are not put in place, we shall have increase in urban population with decrease in churches and at the end we shall have unreached population with the gospel.

In 2020 we didn’t do the fund drive due to Covid19. In September 2021 we did a funds drive and managed to raise ksh. 2,192,000 ($ 16,860). With this amount we managed to purchase a plot outside the Section for KAG Ndururumo, planted Njathaini and supported structure upgrade at Kiwanja. (See the photos of these churches).
In September 2022 we did another funds drive and managed to raise ksh. 2,591,000 ($19,930). With this amount we help churches to upgrade their structures such as Ndururumo, Kiwanja, Zimmerman and Mirema. In September 2023 we held another funds drive and raised ksh. 2,630,570 ($20235) that helped to support development project in the following churches; Wellsprings, Kiwanja, Ndururumo, Evergreen and Zimmerman. (See the phot of KAG Kiwanja)

In September 2024 our focus is to purchase a plot and settles at least one church permanently.
